Lefkada Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Lefkada contains the cultural treasures of the prefecture of Lefkada and presents the long evolution of the island. The Museum exhibits objects from the Middle Palaeolithic period (200,000 BC – 35,000 BC) to the late Roman Empire (4th century AD). The Museum is housed in the building of the Cultural Centre of the Municipality, on one floor which includes the lobby and four rooms that house the collections of the permanent exhibition. The building houses a shop, and there are auxiliary areas for the convenience of visitors, as well as storage areas. The exhibits come from the burial mounds at the sites of Steno and Skaros in Nydri, from the cave of Choirospilia in Evgiro, from the cemeteries of the ancient city of Lefkada, as well as from various other sites (the cave of Asvotrypa in Frini, the cave of Nymphs in Ag. Kyriaki, Skaros, Meganisi). An important part of the prehistoric finds is connected with the excavations carried out on the island by the German archaeologist W. Dorpfeld at the beginning of the 20th century.
